Ontario Mineral Catalog: A
Each species is presented alphabetically by locality, followed, by a brief description, Royal Ontario Museum catalog numbers where applicable, and the best reference(s). Clicking on mineral names in blue will take you to a photograph of that mineral, or to the Type Minerals section.
ACANTHITE
Common in the silver mines of Ontario, typically found in films and masses, to a kilo or more, rarely in fine crystals, though cubes, octahedra, and combinations thereof to 2 cm are known (Walker, 1930). Complex tabular crystals are known and an acicular habit, presumably of secondary origin, has been noted in the worked-out lower levels of mines in the Cobalt district, Trail (1980). Said to be less common than silver in the Cobalt area, and more common than silver in the mines along the Lake Superior shore near Thunder Bay.

ALMANDINE
One of the more common garnets, typically found in mica schists. The most notable locality is River Valley, which has produced good crystals up to fist size. The garnet group is somewhat cursed, as the variability of the chemistry and appearance of its members results in authors discussing the group as a whole instead of as separate species. Much analysis would be required to organize the garnets of Ontario.

ANALCIME
Perhaps the most common member of the zeolite group in the province, but apparently rather rare in crystals of any size. Commony massive and intermixed, doubtless analysis of alteration minerals in the nepheline syenites would turn up further occurrences. Only recently have the zeolites of the Grenville been looked into; they are more common than expected and worthy of study, as evidenced by the work of Van Velthuizen(1991).

The garnets of Ontario need a lot of work, as the variability of the chemistry and the appearance of the group members results in authors discussing the group as a whole instead of as separate species. Doubtless there are localities besides these.
